File Extension UWF Description:

UltraTracker is a module composition program written specifically for the Gravis Ultrasound Soundcard (GUS). The device is a very popular soundcard made for the IBM PC platform, which is known for its unique superior sound quality.

Its uniqueness during its launch was due to certain sample-based "wavetable music synthesis" technology. It provided real-world sound recordings.

UltraTracker uses 2 types of files. These include ULT files as its module files and UWF files as its wave files. These UWF files store audio samples for the UltraTracker program.

Each UWF file starts with a sample name worth 32 bytes followed by a 12-byte DOS Name. This is where the filename is recorded. Next would be a double word start point, a double word end point, a double word SizeStart, and a double word SizeEnd.

The SizeStart is the beginning offset of the sample while the SizeEnd is the finishing offset of the sample. Both offsets instruct UltraTracker how to load the sample into the onboard memory of GUS.

UltraTracker utilizes a type of compression for repetitive events. The offset SizeStart and SizeEnd are followed by the volume. This uses a logarithmic type of volume setting of 0 to 255 bytes. Next is the Bidirectional (BiDi) Loop. It allows UltraTracker to take advantage of GUS' ability to loop a sample in several different ways. This also allows the sample to be played backwards or forward and not looped or looped. BiDi also tracks the specified sample resolution of 16 or 8 bits.

The fine tune setting is contained in UWF files. It uses the full word value of Linear Finetune. After the header, there is the Event data containing:

•Notes;

•Sample Number;

•Effect1 for a high-order byte of Effect variable;

•Effect2 for low-order byte of Effect variable;

•and EffectVar for Effect variables.
