File Extension WBK Description:

A manually created back up for Microsoft Word documents, WBK is an alternative to the AutoSave feature. It is one of four methods for backing up Word doucments and is complemented by AutoRecover files, files marked with a tilde and temporary files. The WBK file will share the same name as the document for which it is a backup.

Computer programs are complicated machines that are often subject to a variety of faults and errors that can damage or destroy files in use at the time of the crash. As a result, software engineers developed methods to ensure the integrity of files in the even of a crash or error. These methods were called backing up and their products are backups. There are many restoration methods available, though most use regular creation of back up files for use in the event of a crash.

This function has lead to programs which iteratively create alternative versions of files. If several copies are stored then the program has access to a whole series of time dependent versions, which constitute a history of changes to the document. This lets users revert to earlier versions or compare changes over a number of drafts. These sorts of files are often used for document recovery. However, the greater complication that comes from managing various version of a file and correlating the changes between each one can lead to further faults. Certain types of errors will damage file in the active memory of a computer should that memory fail. Due to the interconnected nature of these iterated backups, failure of one portion of the file can lead to the corruption of portions of the file not actively being edited.

The WBK file, in contrast with the original document file, will only store the most recent save of a given document, without the list of modifications contained in a regular .doc file. Each save overwrites the previous one. As a result, the loss of the active file due to a program or hardware related crash will not damage the version of the file saved in the WBK extension as it is not active when the main document is being modified. The WBK functionality must be manually activated for each file. Unlike temporary or AutoRecover files, WBK files are not automatically deleted and are not hidden from the file management software. They can be manually deleted to reduce a user's hard drive footprint.
