File Extension TD Description:

The TD format is a configuration file for a machine level debugger called Turbo Debugger, created by Borland Software. Debugging software is designed to examine programming code for errors. The TD format was designed to debug DOS executables, written for 16-bit processors. The TD format contains information relating to the configuration of the main settings of Turbo Debugger. Turbo Debugger was written in ASCII compliant code and complies with other human readable text formats. As they are written in ASCII any text editing program allows for the alteration of the configuration file, reducing the need for specialized programming while allowing search and other operations.

A product of the DOS era's command line writing environment, Turbo Debugger uses sets of commands as its interface method. The TD files consist of arguments and keywords which define the debug environment, with the specific of each debugging session stored in a given TD file. Each piece of code being debugged is paired with a TD file containing the files necessary for the debugging. Once the process is finished, the original program can be modified for recompiling. The Debugger allows users to establish personalized options for the monitoring the debugging process, create breakpoints and declare subroutines even after the Debugger has been initialized. These features produced a flexible design and coding environment with a maximum level of redundancy for error correction.

Turbo Debugger was originally designed for use in the DOS period, which means that it is not natively supported by modern operating environment. Given the popularity and historical significance of programming languages from this period, many hobbyists continue to use both the language and the debugger. As a result, Turbo Debugger software can be operated in DOS emulation environments like DOSBox. With the demise of DOS as the preeminent operating system for personal computing, Borland Software has released versions for Windows 95 and 2000. The final versions of this software, Turbo Assembler v5 operate in the C++ environment.
