File Extension S3I Description:

The Scream Tracker program is used to create music in the module music format. The program creates music by using sample files and arranging them in multiple channels along a timeline. Samples can contain a number of sounds such as voice, instruments and notes. Samples make use of previously recorded analog music, which is converted into digital format. Samples can be strung together by the Scream Tracker program and also modified. The program can also generate its own audio files, particularly instrument files. Version 3 of the Scream Tracker program store instrument files with the S3I file extension.

Tracker programs are made up of similar functions and tools, the main difference is user interface and the different effects added to developed software. Files with the .s3i file extension contain sounds of instruments, which are added to module files. Trackers do not use instrument files with the S3I file extension to hold sustained notes. Rather files with the .s3i file extension are looped to provide the effect of a sustained note.

Files with the S3I file extension can be made up of a number of instruments. The most common instrument used to create files with the file extension .s3i is the piano. Other instruments can be used to create files with the S3I file extension. When version 3 of the Scream Tracker program is installed, it already comes with the instrument files. When users add an instrument to an existing module project, the program accesses files with the S3I file extension and add them to the track.

Sami "Psi" Tammilehto developed the program. Psi was a part of the Future Crew group from Finland. The group was popular in the demoscene. Demoscene is a subculture wherein groups would create tracker music and compete in contests. These groups eventually created their own tracker programs, which allowed them to add the effects and modifications they needed in creating music. Most tracker created by demoscene groups are based on the original tracker program called SoundTracker. Tracker music is often used in computer sound effects as well as video games.
