File Extension PBI Description:

The the PBI file is a component of the installation package system used by PC-BSD, an open source operating system. The PBI files are setup files containing resources such as libraries and modules necessary to complete the installation process on a computer. Developed by iXsystems, PC-BSD offers a high degree of user customization. Some notable features of BSD are a fully developed desktop operating system, using graphical installation procedures for clarity, an online update management system that allows for quick and easy installation of updates and bug fixes, relative safety from Windows based security threats, support for multiple languages and excellent system stability.

Open source software is a relatively new evolution of the old shareware and freeware philosophy found during the early computer era. Created with special copyright agreements that encourage sharing of intellectual property to improve software engineering efforts, open source software is released for free and developed by hobbyists and amateurs as much as by dedicated software companies. Open source operating systems, constructed using code derived from university funded mainframe or computer science projects (generally the UNIX operating system) lead to the development of entirely free operating systems designed from the ground up as integrated operating environments with customized user experiences that could be tailored to whatever set of requirements a user needed.

The PBI functions as an installation wizard that configures set up options by prompting the user. It is a self-executable file that, once configured and initiated, will use embedded procedures to automatically complete the installation process. It is similar to installation systems like InstallShield found in the Windows operating environment. PBI files use their executable code to compile any sources necessary for the creation of the application they're installing. Once installed, applications are logged into the program registry to monitor their interactions, control removal tasks and ensure that dependencies and upgrades are satisfied as system configuration changes or new versions are introduced. The PBI format is a FreeBSD-only piece of software and will not work on any other operating system.
