File Extension ODP Description:

The ODP file extension refers to OpenDocument for Presentations and is used in OpenDocument applications originally developed by Sun Microsystems. The Open Office XML Technical Committee of the Organization further developed it for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS) until it reached its standard status.

The other file extensions used by OpenDocument applications, besides the ODP file extension, are the ODS file extension for spreadsheets, the ODG file extension for graphics, the ODT file extension for Text, and the ODF file extension for formulas or mathematical computations.

A file with the .odp file extension uses the basic element of an OpenDocument file consisting of an XML document that has <document> as its root component. For purposes of reducing file size, it can adopt the ZIP file compression format, which contains numerous files and directories with binary content taking advantage of Zip's lossless compression attributes. It can also benefit from separation of concerns by splitting the contents, styles, and metadata and application settings into separate XML files.

Files with the .odp file extension can contain text, graphics, movies, and other objects that can be positioned on individual pages called slides. Slides are navigated through at the command of the presenter or can be set to automatically change or animate between transitions. They can also be provided with digital photos and music with options on whether or not the show stops at the end or continues to loop.

Because the ODP file extension plays an integral part in the OpenDocument operations, it can be used in the development of free and proprietary software that covers traditional and web-based office suites as well as individual applications like word-processors, spreadsheet solutions, and presentation.

The ODP file extension can be used with some common presentation programs such as Microsoft PowerPoint, OpenOffice.org Impress, Keynote, Presentations X3, KPresenter, Adobe Acrobat, and Mind Map programs.
