File Extension NC Description:

Numerical Control (NC) means the automation of machine tools by series of coded instructions that can be understood by the machine control unit. These coded instructions, consisting of symbols, numbers, and letters of the alphabet, are changed into electrical pulses of current that can be followed by the machine to carry out its manufacturing operations. They refer to specific distances, positions, functions, or motions, which are stored in files with the .nc, file extension.

Files with the .nc file extension contain a cluster of instructions that are usually in the text file of ASCII having lines of text which stipulates the point's axial coordinates in the work envelope. They are prepared from blueprint or CAD files and are transferred to the memory of the computer numerical control (CNC) machines via serial data interface, floppy drive or network connection. Pressing the appropriate key on the machine operator panel once the associated program is executed uses these files.

The files with the .nc file extension can be viewed, edited, and printed by using the NC Editor. The NC Editor contains sequence of codes and parameters that provides precise description of the tool path. It has been designed to help CNC programmers convert the programmed instructions to machine tool movement. It also renders them with 3D images so that they can verify if things work out just as they have planned.

The CAD/CAM software has also developed around the NC concept which made it no longer just for spindle and cutting tool processes but for any processes that can be carried on a machine tool motion platform and can benefit from the separation of programming from operations such as flame cutting, ultrasonic welding, spinning, sewing, fabric cutting, fiber placement, lasing, sawing, and many more.

In addition to its powerful interface that allows machine operators to prepare programs with interactive displays, the NC technology can also be used to create files with the .nc file extension without the aid and need for CAD/CAM. This is because anyone who knows blueprint interpretations and machining concepts can use these files with ease, which now vastly differs from the original NC concept.
