File Extension MAX Description:

The file extension MAX is commonly used by the ScanSoft PaperPort scanning software. The PaperPort software is a tool that can turn paper documents into digital documents and was developed by Nuance Communications Inc. Additionally, the MAX file extension is the file format of images imported through the scanner.

Aside from the PaperPort software, there are also other programs that use the file extension MAX, and one of them is the OmniPage scanning software. Files with the .max file extension are scanned images or text documents saved by the OmniPage program. After the file with the .max file extension is saved, the OmniPage program uses the OCR, or optical character recognition, technology to recognize characters and words and to detect the page layout information from the file with the .max file extension.

When the files with the .max file format contain 3D images, they are used by the 3D Studio Max program. This application is a 3D graphics and animation program and utilizes the MAX file extension to contain three-dimensional models. Such files with the .max extension can include polygon shapes, textures, shading effects, and lighting information. The 3D Studio Max program was the basis for the new 3ds Max application. This new version of the program was developed by Autodesk, but uses a proprietary file format called .3ds.

The last program that utilizes the MAX file extension is Action Replay MAX. For this application, the function of the files with the .max file extension is to provide a format for the user's video game progress. Additionally, files with the .max file extension used for the Action Replay MAX program can contain the saved state of a PlayStation 2 video game. The file extension MAX is particularly useful in terms of file sharing, since it can easily be saved or transferred to the machine's hard drive or to the PC through the use of a USB flash drive.
