File Extension KMZ Description:

The KMZ file extension classifies files as data files, able to store map locations that are viewable in Google Earth. It is actually just a compressed version of a .kml file or Keyhole Markup Language file for Google Earth, but the KMZ file extension is still the default format. KML files are based on XML and are intended to store geographic features like points, lines, polygons, and images. Google Earth is used to load files with the .kml and .kmz file extensions and afterwards, maps geometry features stored in the files.

The .kmz file extension is useful when large data with the .kml file extension needs to be transferred. When the .kml file is zipped, the result is a file with the .kmz file extension. Loading the KMZ file extension on Google Earth does not need decompression, as the program will automatically handle it. The zipped files are renamed as *.kmz in order for Google Earth to recognize the files as those that it can open automatically. Files with the .kmz file extension could also include 3D model data exported from Google Sketchup or ArchiCAD.

The MIME type, or Interned media type for the .kmz files is: application/ Once a file with the .kmz file extension is unzipped, a doc.kml file could be found along with all overlays and icon images that are referenced in the .kml file. Users will find it easy to create .kmz files. First, they just need to create a .kml file, and then they could use WinZip to compress it. Afterwards, double-clicking on the .kmz file in Google Earth will open it automatically. The usual people who use the KMZ file extension are emergency managers, and those in the forecast or warning information agencies.

Another use for the KMZ file extension is exporting the associate file, and then importing it into Google Earth after a GPS tracklog is loaded, or some images are georeferenced. A download of a GPS tracklog or an import of a GPX file is all that is needed to use RoboGEO as a way to convert the GPX file to the KMZ format. The output format 'KMZ with Images' could be chosen if users want to view the file on their local computers, or if they want to share the file but don't have a web server space. Otherwise, the 'KMZ for the Web' or simply the 'KMZ' output format could be selected.
