File Extension JPG Description:

The file extension JPG is a compression format for image files. The file type .jpg is a lossy type of image compression, which means that any expansion of a picture in .jpg file format will have an inefficient and distorted image. The lossy characteristic of a JPG file format has a benefit, though. The lossy compression of a .jpg file gives images a better compression when saving the image file in its first and original state, which, in turn, results in a smaller file size. The first instance of compression in a .jpg file format modifies the characteristics of the pixel data in the image and removes the bitmap characteristics. The files with the .jpg file extension have changed and altered the image and the color state is not retained for further image resizing. The file compressed from a bitmap format to JPG is a final rendition of the said image, if the user does not have any plans of modifying the image files anymore.

Web pages utilize JPG file formats more frequently because of the light data space that the JPG format supports. Web pages use simple layout designs and require only the original state of the images used. This makes the JPG file format popular for usage.

While the JPG format supports a 24-bit coloring scheme, which makes original instances of images crisp and clear, several compressions and resizings of images in the same .jpg format will ultimately destroy the integrity of the color assignment per pixel in the image data.

Other programs that utilize the .jpg file extension are internal software of digital cameras. Normally, the memory allocation of digital cameras can save pictures in the RAW format and convert them to .jpg by default. This is also true about disk space convenience. Had it been a conversion to a bitmap format, the amount of file space consumed will be staggering. Nevertheless, there are options in most conversion software to decompress and recompress the RAW image files into the user's choice of image format.
