File Extension JAR Description:

The files with JAR extensions are Java Archives used to bundle multiples files into a single archive file, to be used in any Java-based application.

The JAR format contains class files for the installation of the Java application, and resource files utilized by the application itself after the unpacking process. Java programs that use JAR file formats include Web-based applets and other third-party applications that are directly installed on Windows operating systems (like those used in Yahoo Messenger).

A JAR file can be created using the Java Development Kit, from version 1.1 to 1.2. Earlier versions do not have any JAR format support.

Compared to using ZIP or RAR formats to archive different files together, the JAR file format has the following benefits:

* The security information embedded into the JAR file contains your digital signature, allowing users to recognize your archive file, and associate it with certain applications.

* The compression ability of a JAR format is more extensive compared to other compressed file types.

* The class and resource files in the JAR archive file can be downloaded onto a single HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) transaction, and does not necessitate the need for downloading the files one by one. This can greatly decrease the download time.

* The JAR format allows you to package extensions without doing any outside coding. This allows users to add functionality to any Java-based platform.

* Java compatibility issues are greatly reduced when using a JAR archive file, since JAR formats are supported components of a Java core platform's API.

One example of a JAR archive file is the Java Runtime Environment you download to add functionality to your Windows operating systems. After downloading, the file will be automatically executed to embed extensions, support, and environment routines directly into your system.
