File Extension CNC Description:

The .cnc file extension is identified as a component that defines the CNC Machine Tool path that is used by the powered mechanical apparatus, used in the fabrication of metal components implementing the machining process. Although commonly mentioned in reference to tools connected to a power source, a machine tool can also be associated with human powered devices, once they are appropriately configured. CNC (Computer Numerical Control), which generates the .cnc file extension, refers to a computer controlled device that utilizes G-Code (a type of programming language used to control CNC Machine Tools) instructions in manipulating a machine tool.

The .cnc file extension contains the G-code instructions used by the CNC milling machine, and helps it to perform numerical interpolation for the cutting tool. Using the .cnc file extension in combination with software that loads the program can alter the parameters used in the operation. The paths indicated in the .cnc file extension are 2D or 3D image models, created from various graphics editing software applications. CNC systems that use the file extension .cnc were fashioned form Numerically Controlled (NC) machines; in fact, the very first CNC system implemented a NC hardware style, which was used for editing and calculating for tool compensation.

Transferring of G-codes contained in .cnc file extensions were done through punched tape devices, and eventually replaced by RS232 cables and floppy disks, until it was finally tied in with the plant network. Majority of shops use their own formats for saving which usually match the ISO certification requisites. However, the .cnc file extension is the most common format used to allow the controller to interpret the G-codes.

The impact of G-codes using the file extension .cnc and the CNC machines, created a radical change in the manufacturing industry, which allowed for easier cutting of curves, faster and easier production of 3D structures, and the reduction of processes that needed human intervention. The automation process rendered by the .cnc file extension, improved the quality and consistency of production, while lessening the frequency of errors and thereby limiting spoilage of materials.
