File Extension CDA Description:

CDA stands for CD Audio Tracks, which are audio files that contain only 44 bytes for each track and are stored on a CD media. Generated by Microsoft Windows as a mere "shortcut," the files with the CDA file extension actually contain no audio. They contain only indexing titles such as Track01.cda, Track02.cda, etc.

The files with the CDA file extension can only be played on a CD-ROM drive. The main reason for this is that the CDA files do not contain the actual PCM information of the audio of the music item to be played. The PCM, short for Pulse Code Modulation, is the standard form for digital audio in computers. It digitally represents the analog signal in which the magnitude of that signal is regularly sampled at uniform intervals. PCM is also the standard in digital video, CD red book, and digital telephone systems.

Files with the CDA file extension only serve as the "pointer" to the audio of the music item. The music tracks on a CD are usually WAV files that we can't see. The files with the CDA file extension have to point to those hidden WAV files before we can hear the audio.

It happens at times that some software show that files have audio recorded on them when you click a file with the .cda file extension. When that happens, it is the software that is operating and not the audio in the .cda file extension. Moreover, if you copy a file with the .cda file extension from the CD-ROM to your hard disk, you cannot play the file because what you copied are just "pointers," and not the actual data of the file in its WAV format.

On Windows and MAC OS, the programs that can open files with the CDA file extension are Apple iTunes and Microsoft Windows Media Player. The VideoLAN VLC Media Player can open CDA files on all Linux; MAC and Windows operating systems while on Windows, the Nullsoft Winamp can also open these files.
