File Extension RAR Description:

The RAR file extension is used with the native format of the WinRAR file archiver. Files in the RAR file extension contain data that are stored in one or more compressed files. If you have downloaded a file in the .rar file extension from the Internet, the contents need to be unpacked for it to be used. The RAR file extension was created by Eugene Roshal, and is a patented format for archive files licensed by WinRAR GmbH.

Files in the RAR file extension has support for error recovery, data compression, as well as file spanning. The WinRAR application has full support for files in the .rar file extension. This program is used to unpack and create files in the .rar file extension. If WinRAR is installed in your computer, a downloaded file in the .rar file extension can be double clicked, and WinRAR will automatically extract the selected file.

Some files with the .rar file extension can have portions of multivolume sequences. WinRAR can be used to split large archives to less smaller files known as volumes. It may have the RAR file extension (as the first volume), and the succeeding volume can have file extensions in, .r01 or .part1.rar, part2.rar, etc. If volumes need to be unpacked, they can all be placed in the same folder, and extraction can be started in the first volume.

Compared to a file in the ZIP format, files in the .rar file extension have several advanced features:

* It has support for multivolume archives

* It allows tight compression that includes solid multimedia, AES encryption and text modes.

* It has recovery records that help repair an archive in the event of physical damage to data. It is resistant to corruption, because of the variable amount of recovery records that it has. Even if some portions of the archive are damaged, there is a large potential for recovery, if there is a large recovery record.

* It has support for Unicode to be able to process file names that are not in English.

Compression operations of files in the .rar file extension usually take much slower than compressing with gzip and ZIP compression algorithms; nevertheless, it has a better rate of compression.
