File Extension BBL Description:

TeX was a typesetting system developed by Donald Knuth. It was used to standardize the appearance of fonts and typefaces in all computers as well as to easily create books. Typesetting used to be done by using different blocks of wood or metal with typefaces or fonts etched into their surface. Before the computer age, this method was the only one used to mass-produce books and publications. Typesetting required different sizes of the same typeface to be stored separately. Using blank typefaces created spaces between letters and words, whereas margins and spacing had to be done manually. The TeX system reproduces this process in a digital manner.

TeX allows users to recreate this process in a digital manner. Several programs to create files, which use specific typefaces and typesetting, use the system. One of the programs that most notably use the TeX system is the LaTeX word processor supported by the TeX system.

Another program that uses the TeX system for the creation of files and documents is the BibTeX program. This application is used to create references that use the typesetting system TeX. Leslie Lamport and Oren Patashnik created the program. It was created for the purpose of separating reference lists from the source document. Reference lists or bibliographies are used to store the sorted or cited references in a written work. These are often attached to written papers or research studies.

The BibTeX program to store bibliographic reference files creates files with the BBL file extension. Bibliographic references with the file extension .bbl are made up of TeX typefaces. These files are laid-out and arranged in a very precise manner. Files with the .bbl file extension contain formatting that is the standard in the publishing industry. Files with the BBL file extension contain information about the source material cited in a certain work. The following are just examples of information that can be stored in files with the BBL file extension.
