File Extension CDF Description:

The CDF file extension is commonly used with Microsoft Active Channel applications for Web browsers, like Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator. It is also being used as a method for pre-caching Active Desktop items, offline content, and Software Update channels.

Described as "Channel Definition Format," the CDF file extension was extensively used by programmers before in updating Web-related content through the use of channels. These channels are direct lines from the end-user to a Web server done through a specific port, which will then act as a gateway to allow the information to be exchanged between the two systems. It is unlike those used for Internet Protocol (IP), especially when compatible software is employed.

The schedule for Active channels can be created (pre-programmed) and stored in files with the CDF extension, and can be read and used by Internet Explorer 4.0 and above. This will determine if the information needs to be updated or not. It will allow users to view certain Web content without actually opening them online, but directly from the updated input on the cache.

One advantage of this is the proper management of server loads and the effective allocation of bandwidth through the use of scheduled updates. These can be enabled and disabled by keying-in a specific time when you want the update to initiate.

In creating a CDF file, the syntax is somewhat similar to those used in creating Web documents using HTML (Hypertext Markup Language). Tags are specifically used to denote file functionalities, along with other information, like channel reference, domain location, date and time of update, enable/disable cache feature, and so on. XML (Extensible Markup Language) is used to create a file with the CDF file extension.

With the current technology, the CDF file extension is no longer being used and was not even included when Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 was released into the market.
